Percy’s English Companion

Percy's English Companion includes several activities for English including discussion questions, vocabulary and creative writing exercises. After reading each chapter of Percy’s Adventures, you may do some or all of the English exercises. For example, after reading chapter one, you may answer the discussion questions about the story to check your comprehension, located on page 1. You may then do several vocabulary exercises including finding definitions on page 2, putting words in alphabetical order making smaller words out of larger words, categorizing vocabulary words by syllables, and sentence formation (page 3). You could match vocabulary words to their definitions on page 4, and draw a word on page 5. Moving on to creative writing, page 6 discusses the basics of rhyming and very simple poetry. Page 7 will get you thinking about how to tell a story of your own. Likewise, each chapter offers a large variety of English exercises.

For example, after reading chapter one, you may do a science experiment about buoyancy and/or a bird study about Adelie Penguins. You may use encyclopedias, bird books, or any number of resources to gather your information. An extra generic bird study worksheet is located in the back of the book and may be photocopied. Bird study answer sheets are also in the back of the book. Likewise, each chapter has an experiment and a bird study.

Percy's Bible Companion includes memory verses and other scripture references related to each chapter of Percy’s Adventures, with suggested discussion questions, fun activity pages, and journaling. For example, after reading Chapter one of Percy’s Adventures, you would refer to Page 1 for the related memory verse and Bible discussion questions. These questions may be discussed in small groups or may be written out in journal style for a little deeper study and meditation on God’s word. As you read some discussion questions, you will be referred to related activity pages and/or puzzle pages. These pages will help you to think about and live out the scripture verses that you’ve read, as well as commit some verses to memory. Along with the activity pages is a journaling page for each chapter of Percy’s Adventures. After reading and meditating on the scripture verses that you’ve read, you can record your thoughts and prayers on these pages.

Any templates you need are located in the back of the book. Likewise, each chapter has a couple of crafts.

For example, after reading chapter one and being introduced to our many bird characters, you may choose to do a quiet, sit-down game such as Bird Checkers. Or, after the story about Jesus healing the paralytic, your students may play an active game such as wheelbarrow races to experience what it would be like not to have the use of their legs. Also, there is a key at the top of each game description with an activity level, level of difficulty for elementary-aged kids, and whether it is best played inside or outside. Likewise, each chapter has a several game options.

Percy's Songs Companion includes a song or two for each chapter of Percy’s Adventures. For example, after reading chapter one, you may sing the “Creation Song” or “Jesus Loves the Little Penguins” to reinforce what the students have heard in chapter one. There are some original songs and some that were written to be sung to the tune of other well-known children’s songs. Where possible, we have included simple sheet music and guitar chords so that you can play the melody and accompany the children while they sing. We have also included a separate page of lyrics that you may copy and distribute or project from an overhead projector.

Percy's Drama Companion includes drama games for each chapter of Percy’s
Adventures. For example, after reading chapter one, you may play a drama game called Noah’s
Menagerie, you may reinforce the Bible story by acting out the story of Jesus healing the paralytic, or you may
reinforce Percy’s story by acting out “favorite things.” Drama games for each
chapter are included.
For those who are interested in doing a final drama presentation at the end of the
curriculum, you will also find a full script, songs, and instructions for making props and costumes in the back
of the book. The theme for the final presentation is a going-away party to send Oliver back home.
Instead of playing the weekly drama games and songs listed in the book, you may use your time to rehearse songs
and dialog as listed in the script. This script is a simple narrator version where you only need a
narrator to guide the children to perform short scenes and songs.
